Director of Development

Children’s Friend and Family Services (CFFS) is seeking a talented fundraising professional for a new role: Director of Development.  Reporting to the Executive Director, this individual will lead in the continued refinement of development strategy and implementation.  As a member of the senior management team, the Director will build the current major gifts program, manage annual giving as well as upgrade and grow a diversified program.

One of the oldest charities in the Northeast, Children’s Friend was founded in 1837 as the Salem Seamen’s Orphans’ Society.  We serve more than 4,500 youth and family members at our offices in Haverhill, Lawrence, Amesbury, Lynn, Gloucester and our primary site in Salem, and in over 40 outreach sites in schools, day care centers and juvenile courts.  Our clients are primarily from disadvantages circumstances from single parent homes.  They are a school-ages population, ages 3-18, strongly clustered in the 11-16 year old range.  Our services r include: Mental Health Counseling for individuals and families – Children’s Friend is  the  leading provider of community-based counseling services for youth in Essex County; a Youth Mentoring Program; Juvenile Court Services providing consultation;; School Consultation & Community Training Services, focusing on child development, parenting, learning disabilities and behavioral management techniques; Teen Parent Child Care Center, offering parent training, counseling and daycare to infants and toddlers of parents attending high school; Day Respite Services, for families of children with severe emotional and behavioral problems; and intensive “wrap-around” services for the highest risk families.   CF has 110 staff, and a budget of approximately $5M.

The Fundraising Opportunity:

CFFS approaches its 170th anniversary with a growing donor pool, a new facility and committed staff and Board leadership poised to significantly expand its philanthropic efforts.

The CFFS development department raises $300,000 annually; primarily through special events, major gift support and grant writing.  The organization is also near completion on a $1.3M capital campaign. Over the last two years, substantial infrastructure upgrades, including a full service database; a three person development team; new communication materials and a revised web site have been developed. Some of the next steps for CFFS philanthropy include cultivation of major gift prospects and a gift club tiered annual fund.

The Position:

This individual will work closely with the CEO, Board, Development Committee as well as current staff to develop and implement a strategic vision and comprehensive fundraising plan.

The ideal candidates should demonstrate:

  • 6+ years of fundraising experience with increasing responsibility
  • Significant grant writing experience both for capital and programs
  • Event sponsorship solicitation experience
  • Previous success in creating successful “hands on” fundraising initiatives/programs
  • Demonstrated experience soliciting major gifts at the five and six figure level
  • Direct experience developing donor pipelines, including management of annual giving and/or direct response
  • Ability to provide the “philanthropy perspective” in working with CFFS senior management and board.
  • Capability to think strategically and partner with key leadership
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and creativity
  • A strong understanding of fundraising systems, Blackbaud/Raiser’s Edge experience preferable
  • Interest in the mission and purpose of CFFS
  • Knowledge of the greater North Shore
  •
